Network Meeting USA 2012

On 21 - 22 September 2012 the second Research-Alumni Meeting took place in Boston, USA. About 20 Research-Alumni from North and Central America met in the German Consulate General in Boston to receive up-to-date information about the Research-Alumni Network and the research location of Heidelberg.

Under the title: Connecting North-America and Heidelberg there was a lively, professional as well as personal scholarly exchange about scientific collaboration on transatlantic level.

At the beginning of the meeting Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel, Rector of Heidelberg University, presented an overview of the current state of research at the university and at non-university research institutions in Heidelberg. Prof. Eitel described long-term developments, international cooperation projects as well as the university's strategy of internationalisation and pointed out the success of Heidelberg University in the second round of the Excellence Initiative.

In the afternoon a panel discussion under the topic: Transatlantic Opportunities moderated by Dr. Joann Halpern, Director of the German Center for Research and Innovation in New York City took place. The Rector of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel and Dr. Eva-Maria Streier, Director DFG North America represented the German Research Landscape. As former visiting researcher and members of the Research-Alumni Network Prof. Dr. Petra Rohrbach (Mc Gill University), Prof. Dr. Robert Norton (University of Notre Dame) and Prof. Dr. Michael Peachin (New York University) attended the panel discussion.

During the discussion the German-American as well as the Heidelberg-American research collaborations were outlined, reconsidered and new principle ideas for a more intensive cooperation came up.

The conference ended with a ceremonial dinner at the Faculty Club of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and provided various opportunities for interesting talks and new contacts.
